A 54-year-old chartered accountant (CA) from Powai was recently duped for ₹3.50 lakh by a woman he came across on dating website locanto.net. The website has been in the news for allegedly conning men and women by offering them convenient deals for selecting partners.

This is the second instance of a person being cheated in recent times after a 65-year-old man from Malad had lost ₹46 lakh in just three days after the accused posed as genuine executives of the said website and demanded money for providing him with a date.

The victim had resorted to the dating site after he divorced his first spouse and proceedings for the second divorce were under trial. According to reports, the accountant had come across this website to find a date and after which, he tried to get in touch with an executive. A few days later, he received a call from a woman who introduced herself as Jenny.

After which, the victim was introduced to a Bengali girl named Debjani Chakraborty who started demanding money under miscellaneous reasons such as privacy agreement, security deposits, and other charges. However, Chakraborty had repeatedly turned down meeting the victim despite him paying a significant amount of money to her.

When he complained to Jenny, she redirected him to her boss Avinash. However, at this point, Avinash began demanding more money which led to the victim growing suspicious. In response, he called off the deal but Avinash said that he would face cancellation charges which resulted in the victim reaching out to the police.

The police have registered the case under section 34 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and section 66(d) of the Information Technology Act and are currently looking for the culprits.
