The Bombay High Court has directed the Maharashtra state government to upload details regarding the implementation of school safety measures outlined in a Government Resolution (GR) issued on May 13 on its official website by October 9. These measures were based on recommendations by a seven-member committee headed by two retired judges, formed to ensure the safety of school children and prevent recurrence of past incidents.
The court was informed that around 40% of schools have so far uploaded compliance data on the official portal, while the process of collecting information from all schools is ongoing. The GR also includes provisions like informing parents via WhatsApp or email, and the formation of Sakhi-Savitri Committees and Student Safety Committees in schools.
The court questioned whether the website allows parents to verify each school's compliance and whether data on actions taken against non-compliant schools is publicly available. It sought clear answers from the government on these points. Importantly, an education department official admitted in court that he had not personally reviewed the website, which raised concerns about oversight and implementation.
