After a long wait, officials from the school education department, announced that the score for HSC (class 12) board examinations will be considered based on an alternative marking scheme. As per the revised guidelines, the assessment will be as per the score received in Class 10, 11 and 12. Moreover, the department has also confirmed that all the HSC (class 12) students will be given a pass mark.

The decision was taken for the HSC board examinations which were cancelled in the state due to the second coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Moreover, the alternative marking scheme was decided keeping the CBSE and CISCE decisions which were announced earlier.

Maharashtra School Education Minister, Varsha Gaikwad, took to Twitter to share the same, with a message that read, "After several rounds of consultations with various stakeholders, we have finalised the assessment mode & the policy for tabulation of marks for Std.12th HSC board students. Given the pandemic situation, state board is permitted to pass all students #HSCExam."

"For an objective & true reflection of a student's performance, his/her scores in college-based assessments in Std.12th & Std.11th exams, and the best 3 performing subjects in Class X board exams will be considered. It is no doubt an ad-hoc arrangement but one that attempts to capture the spirit of continuous assessments using credible data points. It also offers some semblance of 'normal times', with  computation of Std.10th,11th marks based on assessments held during pre-covid times. The overall assessment will be the measure of a students' performance in theory papers & orals/practical/internal assessments. Marks for the latter will be actual basis as per the board's prevailing policy," she added.

The guidelines further state that the students can appear for the next examinations if they are not satisfied with the score and can improve their marks based on the eligible number of attempts. Heads from several institutions were consulted before the decision was announced.

Meanwhile, on June 17, 2021, parents of a few students filed a PIL seeking cancellation of CBSE Class 12 exams. Earlier last month, the court had given the board two weeks’ time to decide a revised method to score class 12 students for the board examinations, basis which the decision was taken to consider scores based on the following

  • 30 per cent  from Class 10 and 11 scores
  • 40 per cent from class 12 internal marks

Officials from the department also confirmed that results will be declared by July 31, 2021.

On the other hand, a day after the announcement was made, the Deputy Director of Education wrote to the School Education Department to allow Class 10 and 12 teachers to travel by the Mumbai local trains, as it is important for them to collate the scores on time. Teachers have also mentioned that this will help them expedite the process as they have to work along with other departments from the institution. Decision regarding this matter is yet to be taken by the state government.
