In 2020, the education department first issued an order to make Marathi compulsory in all schools. On September 13 this year, the government announced that Marathi will be a compulsory core subject in all schools from the academic year 2025-26.

The policy recommends preparation of a 25-year master plan for the promotion of Marathi language in addition to teaching Marathi in schools and Marathi websites. It is also proposed that the government should order senior ministers and senior officials to speak in Marathi to the media and in their daily work.
