The Bombay High Court on Thursday, May 20, 2021, slammed the state government for canceling the SSC board exams. The court questioned the decision to to cancel this exam which is very important for the academic future of the students. The bench ask if the officials would give them a pass mark without any examination and if that was upto the  government to decide or for the court to pass an order. 

Concerns have been raised at the government level, and following up on the same, the media asked the Chief Minister about the matter, as the issue of examinations was raised recently at the state cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, May 19, 2021. Responding to the same, CM said that concerned ministers and secretary of the department have been asked to prepare a report regarding the same, in next two days, post which a decision will be taken by the government.

The second wave of coronavirus pandemic once again raised question marks on the 10th and 12th board exams. The delay in taking decision this year has once again bothered the students in Maharashtra.

After the CBSC and other boards canceled the matriculation examination, the pressure on the state government to take a decision increased, and following this, the department decided to cancel Class 10 board exams and the same for Class XII were postponed.

Former Member of the Pune University, Dhananjay Kulkarni, challenged this decision to cancel the Class X examination in a petition at the Bombay High Court, and asked the reason for the same. He added that the matriculation examinations were one of the most important examinations in school education, but due to the pandemic, the government the same for over 16 lakh students.

Sharing more details, Kulkarni said that the CBSE board often conducts internal assessment of students, but this is not done regularly with the state board SSC students. Therefore, their assessment method cannot be compared. On the one hand, while the CBSC and ICSC boards are planning a method to grade the students, the SSC board has not yet made any preparations, and hence it seems that the exam has been cancelled without planning further. As of now, the state government should reconsider its decision said the court.

Responding to this, the government has demanded time to make a statement through an additional affidavit and consider a final hearing regarding the matter.
