The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced new measures to reduce road dust and construction-related pollution on Monday, December 23. The goal is to improve Mumbai's air quality.

The civic body has launched a complete plan to tackle the dust pollution crisis, which came into effect in every civic ward starting today, December 24.

Here's the list of measures:

1. Roads will be regularly cleaned using large mechanical power sweepers.

2. Water sprinklers will be placed in high-traffic areas and places prone to dust accumulation to keep streets clean and reduce airborne dust particles.

3. Advanced nuisance detectors and clean-up marshals will perform routine inspections of roadwork and construction sites to ensure compliance.

4. Contractors are now required to promptly remove trash, dust, and debris from roads and building sites.

5. Water will be regularly sprayed on open construction sites and stacked materials to prevent dust from becoming airborne.

6. The BMC reiterated its ban on burning rubbish within the city limits. Clean-up marshals and nuisance detectors will strictly enforce this rule.

7. The new regulations require the installation of water sprinklers at construction sites to reduce air pollution.

8. Mechanical sweeping devices will be used to remove dust from all city roads.

Assistant Engineers (AE) in the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Department have been instructed to apply these steps in their respective wards to address the city's worsening air quality. Previously, the BMC had directed all 24 administrative wards to follow 29 specific standards to minimise dust at construction sites. Now, all AEs in the SWM department will follow those guidelines.

* AEs will be responsible for promoting the Debris-On-Call Service to ensure efficient debris collection and disposal.

* They will keep daily logs and provide reports on their inspections, corrective actions, and enhancements.

* AEs will oversee debris disposal to avoid unauthorised dumping.

* They will make sure that all vehicles transporting construction materials have the required permits and adhere to safety protocols.

* Vehicles found carrying unauthorized or exposed debris will face immediate action.

* To ensure accountability and transparency, AEs must report weekly to the chief engineer (SWM) and deputy municipal commissioner (SWM) on inspections, actions taken, and improvements made.

* The BMC warned that those who fail to control dust pollution will face strict disciplinary actions.

Mumbai has seen a decline in air quality in recent weeks. The reason has been attributed to ongoing road construction, various building projects, and unchecked dust emissions.
