Days after the Shinde-Fadnavis government announced to build the Mumbai Metro 3 car shed at Aarey, all entry and exit points to the colony were closed as various works were being carried out by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from Monday morning, July 25.

The work began with trees being trimmed down on the road leading to the Aarey colony.

Confirming the same, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) officials said that access roads to Aarey Colony and its adjoining forest area were closed off amid heavy police bandobast on Monday to allow the pruning and trimming of trees.

This decision has attracted a lot of criticism and angst from green activists and local residents.

The police have tightened security and no one except residents of Aarey are allowed inside the premises where work is underway after checking of IDs like Aadhaar Cards etc. If reports are to be believed, it was being done for smooth passage of metro material to the car shed.

Meanwhile, this came in the midst of the "Save Aarey" demonstrations that were conducted inside Aarey as well as across nine states and union territories on Sunday, July 24.

According to reports, the Mumbai Police has commenced issuing notices of CrPC under section 149 that prohibit the unlawful gathering of activists and NGOs. They have reportedly been coming to police stations, seeking permission for protests at Aarey against the proposed car shed location.

Four persons who were detained for protesting against the metro rail carshed construction in Mumbai's Aarey forest area on Monday were released after 10 hours, a police official said.

Amid a crowd of supporters who had gathered at Vanrai police station in the evening, the four were released after 10 hours of detention, the official informed.

Protesters Tabrez Sayyed and Jayesh Bhise were detained first after notices under section 149 (action to prevent cognizable offence) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) were issued to them and then two others, identified as Laxman Jadhav and Rohit, were detained, he said.

Narratives claim that green activists will continue to protest and demand that the Maharashtra government moves the Mumbai Metro 3 car shed out of Aarey Colony.

For those unversed, the earlier MVA government had shifted the proposed car shed spot to Kanjurmarg. Though, one of the first decisions taken by the new Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis dispensation, which took charge on June 30, was to recommence work at Aarey, one of Mumbai's major green lungs.
