Maharashtra experienced heavy rainfall in 2021 and several districts in Konkan Maharashtra faced losses due to the floods. As per reports, over 3 per cent increase in water levels have been observed in dams across the state and officials have confirmed that the rise is due to the effect of Cyclone Gulab witnessed in the last four days. Torrential rainfall has hit the regions of Marathwada, Vidarbha, Konkan, Western and Northern parts of the state.

A report published in the Indian Express states that over 77 per cent of dams, i.e more than 31 million litres, were filled in the state as of September 27, 2021, whereas on October 1, 2021, the figure has increased to more than 32 million litres accounting to over 80 per cent of the water level, out of the 40 million litre capacity. Officials from the concerned department are constantly checking the water levels and updates are being shared with state's Water Resources Minister Jayant Patil.

Authorities had to open all the dates of the Jaikwadi dam in Maharashtra as the water level had risen to 99 per cent from the previously recorded 83 per cent in merely four days. While this water is used for irrigation and agricultural purposes, any more increase in the level could lead to risky flood-like conditions. Considering the same, the officials decided to take the step to control the crisis in a timely manner.

Meanwhile, similar pattern was observed in damsn located in Beed, Hingoli, Osmanabad, Parbhani and other regions in Maharashtra. Below-mentioned is the rise in water levels across several locations.

Officials state that this is due to cyclone Gulab which recently hit the state and the respective regions. Similar flooding and overflowing was observed a few months back, in the previously hit Cyclone Nisarga and Tautkae. CM Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy CM Ajit Pawat, Former CM Devendra Fadnavis, and other leaders, both from the ruling and opposition party visited the areas in Konkan to review the flood-affected localities.
