This year, amidst the coronavirus crisis, the BMC has decided to deny entry to the devotees for the immersion of the idols in order to avoid overcrowding at Dadar and Mahim Chowpatty.

Every year, on the occasion of Ganeshotsav, Bappa arrives in Mumbai with great fanfare. Mumbai's Ganeshotsav has gained an identity quite unique to its own. Although a large number of Ganesha immersions are performed at Dadar and Mahim Chowpatty every year, devotees are not allowed to enter there this year.

However, this year, special measures will be taken to avoid the grand gestures of the festival. According to sources, the roads leading to the Chowpatty will be closed by erecting iron barriers on the adjacent roads. As a result, devotees will have to immerse Ganesha at home, in the premises of the society or in the nearby artificial lakes.

Devotees visiting the sea in order to immerse the idols will have to hand over the Ganeshmurti to the Municipality for immersion. Last year, about 20,000 Ganapatis were immersed.

Meanwhile, devotees have started registering for Ganesh Visarjan on the municipality's website shreeganeshvisarjan.com. So far two thousand devotees have registered and the majority of the devotees have registered for immersion of Ganesha at Girgaum Chowpatty. This is likely to cause congestion in the area.
