Ten more medical staffers at Tardeo's Bhatia Hospital have tested positive for COVID-19, taking the tally of affected staffers from the hospital to 45. Mumbai is the hotspot for coronavirus in the state and the medical workers are fighting against the pandemic on the frontline, which puts them at risk every day.

Bhatia hospital has become the third-worst medical facility in the city after Wockhardt Hospital and Jaslok Hospital. 80 staffers have tested positive at Wockhardt whereas 57 at Jaslok. Close to 300 medical professionals in the city have tested positive in the city so far.

Other than these hospitals, the count of doctors and nurses at Bombay Hospital who have been infected by the virus has increased to 19. Whereas the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run ENT clinic at Churchgate recorded 13 positive cases of medical staffers. A doctor and a ward boy from a tuberculosis hospital in Sewri also tested positive.

However, despite medical staffers being at risk, they are being compelled to show up at work. A hospital head told TOI that a chunk of their employees had been tested positive or quarantined which raised the issue of running the hospital with deficient manpower.

Furthermore, government has instructed BMC and other private hospitals that they can deduct salaries or even dismiss staffer if they show reluctance to work.

Along with medical workers, the policemen who are patrolling the streets amid the nationwide lockdown are also at a risk. Nearly 64 police personnel from Maharashtra were tested positive for the coronavirus or COVID-19 on Wednesday. The infected policemen include 12 officers and 52 constables. Of the 64 policemen tested positive, almost 34 personnel are from Mumbai.
