In the wake of growing social media influence and technology growth, people are disconnecting from reality resulting in loneliness and mental illness. As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) survey, out of 73 lakh residents, 31 per cent i.e. more than 22 lakh people are dealing with mental illness.

What are the statistics in India?

As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), every one woman out of five and every one man out of 12 men are dealing with mental illness.

Psychiatrist and counsellor Tarannum Dobriyal said that in the last 10 years, lack of communication within the family has grown and this is mostly because of mobile phones and social media.

In metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune, out of 24 hours, youngsters spend 4-5 hours on browsing social media websites. Likewise, they lose their connection with the real world which results in loneliness.

Girls who are 10-years-old post their pictures on social media and they expect thousands of people to like it. Likes and positive comments elevate the mood but if it happens otherwise, then it affects these very young children. Parents should talk to their young children about pros and cons of social media before it gets too late," Tarannum Dobriyal.

Usually, it is very difficult to find out person's mental illness. Mira Road's Wockhardt Hospital psychiatrist Dr Sonal Anand discussed some symptoms with Mumbai Live.

Symptoms of mental illness

  • Insomnia
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling of loneliness
  • Bored with daily activities
  • Massive weight loss
  • Lack of confidence
  • Anxiety
  • Tried committing suicide or thinking about the same

Parents tend to give mobile phones to their three-year-olds and they fail to think about the side-effects. Likewise, when it comes to adults, one cannot avoid working on the computer but they should also keep a tab on their time which is majorly spent on social media websites,” Dr Sonal.

Across the world, more than 45 Cr people are dealing with mental illness and in India, the number has gone up to 5 Cr. Seeing the numbers, it seems that depression will become the second largest disorder by 2022 across the world.
