Rajesh Tope, State Health Minister, speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, stated that the rich have been misusing their privilege, which is why there has been a shortage of ICU beds.

According to the State Health Minister, often the privileged put pressure on the hospital administration and the doctors to admit the patient to the ICU, even though the patient's condition is normal. Even wealthy people who are able to afford to pay for their own treatment, unfortunately, end up in the ICUs. As a result, there is a shortage of ICU beds and patients who really need these beds cannot get them in time.

Tope further stated that the ICU beds should only be available to patients in need of intensive care. Patients with no symptoms should not be moved. For this, along with the hospital administration, the Collector and the Commissioner have to be aware. He also appealed to the patients and their relatives not to put undue pressure on the doctors and the hospital administration.

Moreover, rejecting the opposition's allegation that coronavirus tests are being conducted less in the state, especially in the big cities, Tope stated that the number of tests has not been reduced in Maharashtra at all. In fact, the number of coronary arteries disease patients seems to be on the rise. However, at the same time, the administration is emphasizing on 100 per cent tracing, Tope said in conclusion.
