The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has demanded the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to restart local trains in Mumbai for general passengers as the social distancing norms are being ignored in buses due to overcrowding.
Despite the government involving Maharashtra State Road Transport (MSRT) bus services, the social distancing norms are not being followed due to overcrowding. The AAP demanded that local train and metro services should be restarted for commoners.
The citizens from Mumbai and Thane are still travelling in cramped up spaces despite the coronavirus outbreak, the party said while adding that the bus services should be enhanced to provide relief to the people travelling for work.
"Mumbai's local train services and BEST bus services are not running at full capacity, and this hits the weaker income group and middle class the most as they don't have the luxuries of private vehicles and can’t afford taxis. People can’t afford to lose their jobs and are risking their lives to reach their workplaces,” AAP leader, Preeti Sharma Menon said.
Sharma asked her party workers and volunteers to post photos and videos of queues at the bus stop and crowded buses with time date and location tagging Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
AAP has demanded that the BMC and state govt should come up with a plan to provide relief for commuters of MMR by resuming and enhancing the public transport so that people can travel safely and with social distancing.
The opposition in Maharashtra including Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has been aggressive in their demand to allow the general public to travel in local trains.
