CM Thackeray Meets with Maratha Leaders to Discuss MPSC Examinations
SHARES

Maratha organizations across the state have called for the postponement of Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) examinations over issues related to college admissions as well as Maratha reservations.

Leaders from prominent Maratha organizations met with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday to discuss the matter. The CM is expected to meet with other members of the Maratha community today.

Leaders from the Maratha organizations have said that the lack of Maratha reservation for MPSC exams may result in loss of jobs and opportunities for the younger generation from the community. With this backdrop, the leaders have asked for the examinations to be pushed until a viable solution is found.

In September, the Supreme Court stayed the reservation of employment (12%) and education/admissions (13%) for Marathas which will be in effect for the 2020-21 period. The reservations were implemented in 2018 as part of the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act.

The meeting with the CM on Thursday was attended by three delegations led by BJP MP Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje along with BJP legislator Vinayak Mete and Suresh Patil from the Maratha Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti. Ministers from the State Cabinet as well as the Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar were also said to be present at the meeting.

“We have been assured by the government that the scheduled exams would be cancelled. We have also been assured that the state will positively consider our other demands. We have opposed our inclusion in the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota and have also demanded supernumerary quota to safeguard the interests of our youth until the final decision is made,” Mete was quoted as saying after the meeting.

Interestingly, all three leaders chose to interact with the CM separately, hinting at a rift between Maratha organizations ahead of the meeting. However, Mete refuted the claims saying, “Solving the crisis is more important, and if several delegations are meeting the government, there should not be any objection to it.”
