After Maharashtra Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray announced Mumbai 24/7 nightlife project, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raj Purohit said that nightlife was not part of Indian culture.

This comes after Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government is set to begin the trial run of the ‘nightlife’ project in Mumbai.

While opposing the same, Purhoti said that rape cases will increase in Mumbai if malls, eateries and pubs are allowed to remain open through the night.

I have been protesting against nightlife in Mumbai for the last five years. It is not a part of Indian culture. This will lead the youth down on a wrong path and will increase rape cases and crimes against women,” senior BJP leader Raj Purohit said.

Purohit further stated that there are not enough cops in the city and the nightlife project will hamper law and order.

Earlier on January 16, Aditya Thackeray had said that the shops, malls and restaurants in Mumbai’s non-residential areas will have an option to remain open 24/7 from January 26.

However, Thackeray mentioned that it will not be made compulsory, adding that this step will provide more revenue to the state government and generate employment.

Shiv Sena MLA Aditya Thackeray has been advocating for the shops to be open overnight in Mumbai for a long time now.

Reacting to this, Raj Purohit said that if a culture of 'alcohol' gets popular, there will be thousands of Nirbhaya cases.

Earlier, the Maharashtra Home Minister had objected to the proposal raising security concerns. However, Deshmukh later changed his mind and said that it could be done selectively and “not for the entire city”.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray finally spoke on the Mumbai nightlife issue saying that the project to open shops, malls, and eateries for 24/7 should be implemented in selective areas. This should be done on an experimental basis, CM Thackeray added.
