Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ashish Shelar has urged all the Ganpati mandals in Mumbai to get permission for the mandap from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

“The decision to install Ganesh idol depends on the mandals. However, taking permission to set up mandaps for Gandpati is necessary for court battles and the future of Ganeshotsav,” Shelar said in a video message.

He added that the BMC gives nearly approves 12,000 application for Ganesh Mandals in Mumbai each year. However, this time, only 600-650 permission have been issued by the civic body.

“Even if the Mandals decide not to install Ganesh idols, they should seek permission for mandaps to maintain the future of Ganeshotsav celebration,” Shelar asserted.

The BJP MLA demanded the BMC to give permission to all the mandals to set up Ganesh Mandaps and issue a letter in the form of an ordinance. This should be done on the basis of last year’s figures, he said while adding that it was important for Ganeshotsav Mandals to get permissions as this tradition depends on continuity.

Earlier, Shelar wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray raising concerns over the travel for Konkan people who wish to go to their villages ahead of Ganeshotsav. He further questioned the government on the availability of the e-passes and safety measures for the passengers who wish to travel to Konkan for the festival.
