Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Yashomati Chandrakant Thakur has been sentenced to three months imprisonment in an eight-year-old case of assault on police personnel.

A court in Amravati on Thursday sentenced Thakur to three months jail and held her guilty in the assault case. She was also fined ₹15,500. The district and sessions court also convicted three others in the case, including Thakur’s driver and awarded them three months in jail as well.

The other three accused in the case will also have to pay the fine ₹15,500 ruled Court judge Urmila Joshi. Furthermore, the court ordered that if the four convicts fail to pay the fine, they will have to serve for one more month.

All the four accused along with Thakur, a Congress leader, were held guilty of beating up a police officer named Ulhas Rurale after he stopped the minister’s vehicle on a one-way lane near the Ambadevi temple in Amravati. The incident happened on March 24, 2012.

After the case was registered, it went to the district court.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded her resignation. The minister, however, has described this as a conspiracy against her. Thakur said that she is being targeted by the BJP due to this incident because of her ideological differences.

“Our fight against their fascist ideology will continue. No matter how many obstacles they create, no matter how much they try to finish us, but still, we will continue this fight,” she said.

Instead of demanding my resignation, BJP should talk about the work done by its own leaders in the last five years, Thakur said.
