Last month, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) had directed all the regional offices to recover the pending bills during the lockdown and immediately cut off the power supply if the payments are not made.

Reacting to this, BJP MLA Ashish Shelar taunted the Thackeray government saying that it seems to have lost connection with the common people. However, BJP assured everyone that we will not let them cut off the electricity supply of consumers in any way.

There are many electricity consumers in the state that have not yet cleared their dues in the hope of getting a rebate on their increased electricity bills. In addition, the power companies have instructed the authorities to cut off the power connections of customers who have not paid their electricity bills for the last seven to eight months.

Moreover, Shelar said that the decision to cut off the electricity connection of lakhs of citizens and farmers is like breaking the connection of the state government with the general public. “The state government was going to provide free electricity to ordinary consumers, up to 100 units of electricity at a lower rate, what happened to it? He was going to help the farmers, what is the update on that? BJP will fight hard against this only for the common people and will not allow anyone to cut the power connection of the common people.”

Earlier, MNS president Raj Thackeray had created a stir by making a statement on electricity bill waiver. He was the first in the state to raise the issue of increase in electricity bill during the lockdown. MNS workers had staged agitation across the state to waive the increased electricity bill.
