The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a statewide agitation in Maharashtra on August 29 to demand the reopening of temples. Chandrakant Patil, BJP’s state unit president, has urged the party workers to actively participate in the agitation and said that his party supports the demand to reopen temples in the state.

Several religious institutions, leaders and heads of the temple will take part in the agitation to press their demand for reopening temples in Maharashtra. The BJP has called this agitation as ‘ghantanad’ or ‘bell-ringing agitation’.

Patil informed that the protestors will ring bells and beat drums to draw the attention of the Maharashtra government to their demands. He also instructed that those participating in the agitation will follow all the rules to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Wearing face masks and practising social distancing is mandatory.

Patil said that the central government has already issued a circular regarding the reopening of temples. There’s a repeated demand from the individual and religious organisations to reopen the temples. However, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra is not willing, he added.

Patil further informed that the people living in urban and rural parts of the state also want the daily rituals of bhajan and kirtan to start again. He said that the livelihood of many people in the vicinity of the shrines and major temples depends only on the temples.

“That too needs to be considered sympathetically by the state government,” the Maharashtra BJP chief added.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has also written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari demanding that all places of worship reopen in the state.
