As Mumbai was flooded once again due to heavy rainfall, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pravin Darekar raised questions over the efforts made by Shiv Sena while being in power in the civic body for last 30 to 40 years.

“Shiv Sena erected hoardings all over the city saying ‘they have done it’. If Mumbaikars venture into the water every year, what have you done while being in power for the last 40 years?” Darekar asked.

Darekar, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative council, said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) should take responsibility for the flooding in Mumbai. Everyone in Mumbai knows where the waterlogging happens and the required machinery is also present to fix waterlogging areas, he added.

“Mumbai was flooded again and the BMC should take responsibility for it. Does is rain suddenly? They had nearly 7-8 months to fix the waterlogging areas in Mumbai. Everyone in Mumbai knows where they are. There is no problem of funds and the machinery is also present,” the BJP leader said.

Darekar further said that the authorities don’t pay attention and Mumbai gets flooded every time it rains. No planning is done to solve the issue of flooding and all the time is spent on mere talking, he added while lashing out at Shiv Sena.

Mumbai has received 286.4 mm of rainfall since Tuesday. Overnight rains in the metropolitan have broken a 26-year record. In September, for the first time in 26 years, Mumbai received the maximum rainfall in 24 hours. Heavy rains that started from Tuesday night in Mumbai and suburbs continued till Wednesday morning.

The heavy downpour caused waterlogging in several places, disrupting traffic on road. Due to stagnant water on the railway tracks, the train service between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Thane, CSMT to Vashi and Churchgate to Andheri was disrupted.
