As the Maratha outfit has called for a statewide ‘bandh’ to protest against the Maharashtra government over the Maratha reservation issue, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje on Friday, October 9, attacked the Uddhav Thackeray government saying that the efforts to save Maratha quota seem to be falling short.

The Supreme Court had earlier ordered an interim stay on the implementation of Maratha reservation in education and government jobs under Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC) category. Later, the Maharashtra government filed an application in the apex court seeking a vacation of the interim stay order.

Sambhajiraje, who was leading a protest in Taljapur in Osmanabad district of Maharashtra, said that the Maratha community and their demands shouldn’t be taken for granted. He warned that swords will be drawn if needed.

“The efforts of the Uddhav Thackeray government to maintain the Maratha reservation seem to be falling short. There is no coordination between the central and state governments. Don’t take us for granted and don’t force us to take law in our own hands. We know how to practice restraint but we will draw swords when needed,” Sambhajiraje warned.

The BJP MP also took a dig at other leaders from the Maratha community saying that they are only seen giving TV bytes but don’t come on streets to lead the agitation. Sambhajiraje announced that they will protest against Maharashtra Minister Ashok Chavan outside his residence on October 15.

Meanwhile, Maratha organisations across the state have called for the postponement of Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) examinations. Leaders from prominent Maratha outfits met with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday to discuss the matter.

They said that the absence of Maratha reservation for MPSC exams may result in loss of jobs and opportunities for the students from the community. The leaders from the Maratha community have asked for the examinations to be pushed until a viable solution is found.
