The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has extended its support to the protest by religious leaders and devotees in Maharashtra against the Uddhav Thackeray government demanding the reopening of temples.

The religious leaders and devotees across Maharashtra will be observing a fast for few hours to register their protest against the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government over the delay in the decision to reopen temples in the state.

In a statement, the BJP said that it will take part in the protest and demanded that the temples should be allowed to reopen. “MVA government has allowed the bars and restaurants to start but hasn’t taken a decision to reopen temples. There is a huge demand for it,” the party said.

The protest will be held on October 13 outside temples. The store owners who are dependent on the devotees visiting temples for their business will be fasting between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Maharashtra BJP President Chandrakant Patil will also join the protestors in Shirdi.

The opposition parties in Maharashtra have been pressuring the state government to allow the reopening of temples. Apart from BJP, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), Ramdas Athawale-led Republican Party of India (A) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) have all demanded that the religious places open.

Recently, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had slammed the MVA government for not allowing temples to reopen. While speaking at a meeting of Maharashtra BJP Executive, Fadnavis said that the state government has allowed liquor but not temples to start.

“Not temples, but liquor has been allowed. What is this? At least have respect for Hindu Hridya Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray. Change, but not so much. Allow temples to open in Maharashtra,” Fadnavis said.
