In a major relief for the tenants, the Maharashtra government on Friday directed landlords to delay rent collection by at least three months in the wake of the coronavirus or COVID-19 outbreak. The advisory issued by the state Housing Department stated that no tenants should be evicted from their properties as the nation combats the spread of the coronavirus.

“Maharashtra State Housing Department has issued instructions to landlords/ house owners to postpone rent collection by at least three months. During this period, no tenant should be evicted from the rented house due to non-payment of rent (sic)," the official Twitter handle of Chief Minister tweeted on Friday. 

Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing Department, Sanjay Kumar has issued the advisory for deferment of the rent for the next three months. This is being done to prevent the eviction of tenants amid the coronavirus outbreak. 

Due to the nationwide lockdown in the wake of coronavirus pandemic, the business activities across various platforms have come to a halt. The states across India are looking at an economic crisis. The same has also affected jobs and the livelihood of people which has brought financial problems for many. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced the extension of the nationwide lockdown by May 3. The 21-days lockdown which started from March 25 was extended in view of the increasing cases of the coronavirus or COVID-19. 

Maharashtra is the worst-hit state in India due to the coronavirus outbreak and has already crossed the 3,000-mark with over 3,200 COVID-19 cases. Of the 3,200 cases in Maharashtra, over 2,000 cases have been reported in Mumbai. The death toll in the state is nearing 200-mark with 194 deaths reported till now.
