The gathering of migrant workers and labourers amid the lockdown in Bandra has taken a political turn. Vinay Dubey, who was arrested by Mumbai Police for posting a video on social media saying that migrants should take to the streets, has been linked to Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) by certain sections of the mainstream media.

Maharashtra Minority Affairs Nawab Malik took to Twitter to inform that Vinay Dubey was not associated with NCP. “The government must arrange transport for us so that we can go home. I will walk with you (migrants) all the way to Uttar Pradesh if required,” Dubey, president of Uttar Bharatiya Maha Panchayat Association, said in a video.

Earlier, there were media reports in media stating that Dubey was a member of the NCP. However, Nawab Malik refuted the claims saying that some sections of news media are calling Dubey an NCP leader which is “false”.

“This is to make it clear that the man Vinay Dube arrested by Navi Mumbai Police and later by Mumbai Police is not a member of the NCP. Some sections of news media are calling him an NCP leader which is false and appears to be a malicious campaign to malign the image of our party (sic),” Nawab Malik tweeted.

Furthermore, Malik stated that Vinay Dubey had earlier contested elections for Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha as an independent candidate.

Malik, who is the national spokesperson of the NCP, also warned an English news channel to rectify their “false information” or else they will face legal action. Nawab Malik reiterated that Vinay Dubey is not a member of the NCP.

Over 3,000 migrant workers and labourers gathered near Bandra (W) railway station and were later dispersed as the police lathi-charged them. The migrants say that they are stranded in the city due to the nationwide lockdown as they have no money and food.
