The nationwide lockdown implemented across the country due to the coronavirus outbreak has brought a halt to several business activities. Meanwhile, there is an urgent demand for safety equipment like PPE kits to combat the coronavirus or COVID-19.

Amid this crisis, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis has asked the state government to borrow money from the “cash-rich” Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in order to buy the equipment required to stop the spread of the deadly virus.

While talking to a Marathi channel on Sunday, Fadnavis said that money should not be an excuse for delay in getting the equipment while adding that the BMC and MMRDA have bank deposits worth thousands of crore which can be utilised in the fight against the coronavirus outbreak.

The BMC is controlled by the Shiv Sena and CM Uddhav Thackeray is the head of the party, the senior BJP leader said while adding that the funds from the civic body and the MMRDA can be utilised to get more testing kits, PPE for health workers and other necessary equipment.

“Once the economy starts functioning after several months, the borrowed money can be refunded. Money should not be an excuse for the delay in getting items like PPE,” Fadnavis asserted.

Devendra Fadnavis also said that the containment zone method seems to be working. “It is an important stage before we enter the community transmission stage,” he added.

Moreover, speaking on the Maharashtra government’s decision to deploy State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) in congested areas such as Mumbai, the BJP leader said that he with the government on this one while adding that the SRPF can be used effectively to keep people indoors during the lockdown.
