Shiv Sena on Saturday poked fun at Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray over his demand to allow liquor shops to start their operations. As per Raj Thackeray, it will help generate more revenue for the state.

However, Shiv Sena stated that the state doesn’t earn revenue by only starting shops, factories are not operational as well. When a distributor purchases the product from the factories is how a state gets revenue in the form of excise and sales tax, the Shiv Sena said in an editorial published in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

“Raj Thackeray should know that due to the lockdown, not just the wine shops but even the liquor factories at a halt too,” Shiv Sena said while adding that if the shops reopen, social distancing norms will not be followed.

In a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Raj Thackeray said that as every other industry is shut, allowing the sale of liquor and wine can generate revenue through excise duty. The state could generate ₹41 crores in a day and ₹1,250 crores in a month through excise duty, the MNS chief said.

In his letter, Thackeray clarified that the suggestion was not for ‘liquor lovers’ but to generate the much-needed revenue of the state. Moreover, the lifting of lockdown which was extended until May 3 is also not likely.

The MNS chief also suggested that small restaurants and canteens should be allowed to function against as the loss in income affects not only the businessmen but also the employees.

Reacting to his demands -  allowing restaurants, eateries and wine shops to operate, Shiv Sena mocked MNS chief Raj Thackeray stating that he told the government that along with food, alcohol is also an essential item.

“He has pointed out that rice plate is important for people and they are also dependent on ‘quarter’ and ‘peg’,” Shiv Sena said in its editorial while wondering whether Raj Thackeray was concerned about state revenue or the habitual drinkers.

The Shiv Sena also took a dit Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis. The editorial said that the opposition leaders should advise the government on how to improve the economic situation in the time of this crisis. “However, the leader of the opposition hasn’t been able to do so,” the editorial read.
