Amid the rising coronavirus cases, the Mumbai Police reimposed section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in the metropolitan restricting movement of one or more persons in public places or gatherings. The movement of people will only be allowed for the listed emergency and non-emergency services by the government, the police informed. 

However, social distancing norms were allegedly defied outside Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s residence ‘Krishna Kunj’. A large gathering of the crowd was seen outside Thackeray’s house in Shivaji Park. These people were gathered to formally joined the MNS. 

A party office-bearer informed that these people had come from Worli and joined the MNS. The area outside Thackeray’s house was crowded for some time, but they were asked to maintain social distancing. 

As per the government’s protocol, practising social distancing is must in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Mumbai has witnessed a huge spike in the coronavirus cases in the last few days. 

The number of rising coronavirus cases in Maharashtra are concerning and it has been one of the worst-hit states in India from the inception of the coronavirus outbreak. Earlier, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan also raised concerns over the same saying that maximum cases were being reported from Maharashtra. 

As of September 17, the coronavirus cases in Maharashtra have risen to 11,451,840 and the death toll has touched 31,351. The active cases in the state remain 3,01,752 while almost 8,12,354 people have recovered from COVID-19. On Thursday, Maharashtra reported 24,619 coronavirus cases and 398 fatalities in 24 hours.
