Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday stated that the state government should immediately hold a meeting with State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC) to enable and provide fresh crop loan waiver to debt-ridden farmers in the state.
Fadnavis wrote a letter to Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray highlighting that the process of loan waiver has been stopped since March due to the coronavirus pandemic and the bank was not considering the farmers’ applications for the loan.
“Farmers are not getting crop loans and are still under debt. The process of loan waiver was stopped since March this year due to the coronavirus pandemic and the banks are not accepting their applications for the loan. This is causing problems to the farmers, especially in districts of the region including Vidarbha and Marathwada,” Fadnavis wrote in his letter to Thackeray.

Furthermore, Fadnavis asked the Chief Minister to ensure that a representative from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was present at the SLBC meeting. The government will have to directly tell the SLBC to consider loan application of all farmers including those in debt, the BJP leader said.
“The state government has issued a directive to this effect. However, the implementation of the same depends on the order which will come from RBI to all financial institutions,” Fadnavis said.
The former CM said that banks don’t issue fresh crop loan to farmers if their dues are not cleared. “Government assurance to clear loans in coming months is not satisfactory. It will have to be pursued with the RBI as well,” he said.
Of the 1.52 farmers in Maharashtra, the state government’s loan waiver scheme has only benefited 19 lakh farmers, Fadnavis said.
