EC sends notice to Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam over his remarks against PM Modi

After remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Election Commission has sent a notice to Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam for calling PM Modi 'a modern-day incarnation of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb'. EC has asked Nirupam to reply to the notice within 24-hours. 

According to the notice issued by EC, Nirupam has been charged with the prima facie for violating the model code of conduct. Along with this, the Election Commission has asked the senior Congress leader to explain the remarks made by him against the Prime Minister by the evening of May 15.

What were Nirupam’s remarks?

Earlier, during a rally in Varanasi, Nirupam had said that PM Modi is a modern-day avatar of Aurangzeb while referring to the destruction of old temples and buildings in the name of constructing Kashi-Vishwanath corridor. 

Nirupam, who is a Congress candidate from Mumbai North-West Lok Sabha constituency, also alleged that ₹550 fine is being imposed to catch a glimpse of Baba Vishwanath.
