Maharashtra Textile and Fisheries Minister Aslam Sheikh has written a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray urging the state government to implement Congress’ demand of providing 500 square feet houses to people living in Mumbai slums.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections which were held in 2019, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had promised that if his party comes in power, they will provide 500 sq. ft. house to slum dwellers.

If Congress comes to power, the slum dwellers in Mumbai will be provided with 500 square feet under Slum Rehabilitation Scheme (SRA),” Rahul Gandhi said during the Lok Sabha election campaign in Mumbai.

Congress failed to gain pain power in the centre but managed to form a government in Maharashtra along with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shiv Sena.

In the letter, Congress leader Aslam Sheikha pointed out that SRA work has been stopped in several places in Mumbai.

SRA work has been stopped on a large scale in several places in Mumbai. In many places, houses build under the SRA scheme are so small that even five people can’t reside there properly. In such a situation, if a house of 500 sq ft is provided, the family members will be able to live comfortably,” said Sheikh in his letter.
