Maharashtra Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has condemned the “hooliganism” of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Yuva Morcha for vandalising a toy shop in Malad’s Evershine Nagar locality. The party has demanded action against those who vandalised the shops and urged the Maharashtra government to enact laws to protect shopkeepers and their livelihood.

The AAP said that the burden of these destructions will fall on fellow Indian who are already suffering from huge losses due to the lockdown in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

“This is empty symbolism and will further cause hardship to shopkeepers who are already suffering due to the huge losses incurred during the lockdown,” the party said in a statement taking strong objection to the vandalism of shops selling goods allegedly imported from China.

BJP Yuva Morcha on Sunday created havoc outside a toy shop in Malad which apparently sold China-made products. Mumbai BJP Yuva Morcha’s chief Tejinder Singh Tiwana and other party workers were protesting outside the shops which had toys on display.

While protesting amid coronavirus outbreak, the BJP youth wing destroyed some items from the shops. The incident happened in Evershine Nagar locality in Malad on Sunday. However, the Bangur Nagar Police in Mumbai has booked them several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

AAP’s National Executive Member Preeti Sharma Menon attacked the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) saying that they should volunteer to go on the frontline and do something productive.

"This is plain goondagiri. What happened to the RSS' claim of being able to raise an army in 3 days? Why aren't they volunteering to go on the frontline? Why don't they do something productive? Why don’t they demand answers form the Central Govt, where they are in power as regards the many inconsistencies and self-contradictions?” Menon asked.

She further said that recent remarks made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi have made the sacrifice of 20 Indian Army personnel go in vain and became a fodder for the Chinese to justify their stance.

"This is false bravado at the expense of small entrepreneurs and shopkeepers and street vendors, who are already having a tough time staying afloat, during the lockdown. This violent act is also reflective of their poor understanding of economics and international trade,” Dhananjay Shinde, Maharashtra AAP Secretary said.

In a globalised world, with complex intertwined supply chains, at many levels, designating a nationality to a product, is a gross oversimplification, he added.
