Nana Patole, the President of Maharashtra's Congress party, has launched a sharp critique against the Central government, alleging unfair distribution of funds despite Maharashtra's significant contributions through GST and other taxes. Patole's accusations have sparked controversy, reigniting debates over fiscal equity and transparency in fund allocations to states.
Biased Fund Allocation
Patole highlighted a glaring disparity in fund allocation since the inception of the new NDA government. According to him, Maharashtra has received only Rs8,000 crore in funds, while states such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar, under BJP or allied leadership, received Rs25,000 crore, Rs10,970 crore, and Rs14,000 crore respectively. These figures, Patole argued, illustrate a systematic bias favoring BJP-ruled states and its allies over Maharashtra.
Criticism and Disparities
The Maharashtra Congress President criticized what he described as a clear pattern of discrimination in fund allocation. He pointed to instances where even states governed by opposition parties received higher allocations than Maharashtra. For example, Karnataka received Rs5,000 crore and Delhi Rs2,525 crore, while Andhra Pradesh, an NDA ally, received Rs5,622 crore. Patole emphasized that these funds rightfully belong to taxpayers and should be distributed equitably to support Maharashtra's development needs.
Call for Investigation and Response
In addition to financial grievances, Patole demanded a thorough investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into alleged corruption surrounding the NEET-UG medical entrance exams. He expressed serious concerns over reports of inflated marks and corrupt practices influencing admissions. Patole attributed these issues to the BJP's introduction of NEET, which he claimed has exacerbated financial burdens on parents through increased tuition fees and hindered access to government colleges for economically disadvantaged students.
