Maharashtra Leader of Opposition (LoP) Devendra Fadnavis has written a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray expressing the need to prevent hoarding and black marketing of Remdesivir injection for COVID-19 patients.

“Remedesivir is an important drug in the treatment of coronavirus. But due to the shortage of this medicine, the patients are suffering. Therefore, the state government needs to pay attention to ensure smooth supply of Remedesivir,” senior BJP leader Fadnavis said.

In his letter, Fadnavis mentioned that poor patients suffering from COVID-19 are dying as they are not able to buy Remdesivir injection from the chemist. He has urged the Uddhav Thackeray government to ensure that the drug is available for poor patients for free in government and private hospitals.

“The claims made by the state government regarding the availability of Remdesivir doesn’t matter as patients have informed about its shortage. They are being told by hospitals to go directly to the chemist to buy it. Given its cost, it is not within the reach of the common man. As a result, their mortality rate has also increased,” the BJP leader said.

Fadnavis further highlighted that Maharashtra is seeing an average rise of around 20,000 coronavirus cases and 450 COVID-19 related deaths every day. Patients lacking the drug are suffering immensely.

Earlier, the Maharashtra government called for appropriate use of Remdesivir drug during COVID-19 treatment. Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope had informed that the Food and Distribution Administration must ensure the strict monitoring of Remdesivir supply.
