Opposition leader Dhananjay Munde and MLA Sunil Tatkare have demanded in the legislative assembly that the state should apply seventh pay commission to Anganwadi workers if the state is planning to bring them under the ambit of the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act 2017 (MESMA).

Opposition leaders believe that the state government’s MESMA Act move is inhuman. In Maharashtra, angandwadi workers provide mid-day meals to 73,00,000 children in 97,000 Anganwadi centres and look after 3,00,000 pregnant women.

In 2017, Anganwadi workers had gone on a month-long strike to get their demands passed and the same was done in 2014 when the workers had been on strike for 26 days. Munde alleged that 13,000 Anganwadi workers lost their jobs when the state lowered the age bar of working from 65 to 60.

Anganwadi workers comprises of the widow, single women and women abandoned by their husbands. On top of this, these women don’t get sufficient honorarium. This is injustice on these workers,” Dhananjay Munde, LoP, MLC.

Some facts of Anganwadi workers
