Maharashtra government likely to allow gyms, shopping malls to reopen

Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope informed that the decision on reopening gyms and shopping malls will be announced soon and the final decision to do so remains with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

The state government is planning to allow shopping malls and gyms to reopen under the ‘Mission Begin Again’ as a part of unlocking the economic activities in the state, Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope informed on Wednesday. 

The shopping malls and gyms have been closed in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Tope said that the final decision to allow them to operate remains with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. 

While speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Tope said that the unlocking process under Mission Begin Again has already started in Maharashtra and there will no more lockdown. 

The decision on reopening gyms and shopping malls will be announced soon, he said while informed that the decision to start local train will also be taken by the Chief Minister. 

“The government is currently considering whether to reopen gyms and shopping malls in Maharashtra. Gyms will be considered positive as it is necessary for the fitness of the people. However, the final decision will be taken by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray,” Tope said. 

In Maharashtra, the state government has been providing ease in lockdown restrictions since June 1 under the ‘Mission Begin Again’ and has started several economic activities in a staggered manner even in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) where the number of coronavirus cases has been increasing rapidly. 

Earlier, the government allowed hotels and other entities providing accommodation services in the state including MMR to operate at 33 per cent capacity from July 8. 

Moreover, the government has allowed markets to open on all seven days of the week while allowing the shops to remain operation till 7:00 PM and function on the basis P1-P2 basis wherein shops on one side of the lane will remain open on odd days and those on the other side will remain open only on even days.
