The Maratha community has been demanding reservation for a long while now and the decision is pending with Maharashtra government and courts. A young activist named Kakasaheb Dattatre Shinde, (28), committed suicide by jumping into the Godavari river in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad.

This has led to a huge agitation among the protesters. Earlier, Bombay High Court had asked Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission, appointed by Maharashtra government, to submit a report on the socio-economic status of Maratha community by August 14.

Demanding Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ resignation, agitated protesters said that the dead body will not be cremated if the CM doesn’t resign.

Earlier, the Maratha community has peacefully protested several times against the government pressing their demands for reservation. However, the death of the young man has sparked Marathas to agitate in small towns and rural parts of the state. With the destruction of vehicles and roadblocks, the nature of the protest seems to be turning aggressive.
