Geeta Jain, the Independent member of the legislative assembly in Maharashtra, was tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday. She is an MLA from the Mira-Bhayandar assembly constituency and is currently under home quarantine.
According to a report published in Hindustan Times, Jain might have contracted the coronavirus during one of her visits. Bharat Jain, the husband of the former Mayor of Mira-Bhayandar, informed that she was actively working in the red zones.
Geeta Jain is undergoing treatment and her health is improving, her husband said. He also informed that the MLA showed symptoms such as loss of smell, cough for four days and got herself tested on Tuesday. Jain went under home quarantine after her report came positive.
Earlier, three cabinet ministers in the Uddhav Thackeray government were tested COVID-19 positive. However, they were discharged from hospital after recovering from COVID-19.
Maharashtra Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad was the first cabinet minister to get infected followed by Ashok Chavan and Dhananjay Munde. The trio recovered from COVID-19 and have taken resumed their ministerial work.
The twin-city of Mira-Bhayandar has been adversely affected due to the coronavirus outbreak in Maharashtra. On Wednesday, nearly 112 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the twin-city. However, no fatalities due to COVID-19 were recorded in the region, as per the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC).
Meanwhile, the newly appointed MBMC Commissioner Vijay Rathod announced a complete lockdown in the region from Wednesday to July 10. Only essential services and medical stores will remain open during this period.
