The police have registered a case against several Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists for celebrating Dahi Handi in Mumbai and Thane whilst neglecting the state government’s ban. Against this backdrop, MNS President Raj Thackeray held a press conference and attacked the state government.
The state government had yet again banned the celebration of Dahi Handi as a precautionary measure against the backdrop of coronavirus infections in the state. However, the MNS has taken an aggressive stance by challenging the government. In many places, MNS activists and office bearers are being prosecuted by the police for celebrating the festivities in public places.
Commenting on this, Raj Thackeray said, “Everything is going smoothly in the state, yatras are going on, meetings are being held and there are fights over it. Builders are meeting government people to get the work done. The virus doesn’t spread through it, but spreads when the festival comes”.
He added, “Bhaskar Jadhav’s son went to the temple and performed the anointing. I mean temples are started for them, but not for others? We have been asked not to celebrate Dahi Handi, but does it seem like the crowd has diminished? The Jan Ashirwad Yatra was held and it continued, where was the lockdown then? All this is being done consciously by presenting such a question. If the government wants to make rules, it should do so for everyone. One rule for one and another for the rest will not work.” He warned that all festivals must be celebrated.
He added, “Let today go, then I will hold a meeting of all my workers wherein we will discuss all this. All temples must be opened, otherwise, we will ring the bell outside all temples. If people are afraid of stepping out of their homes, how are we at fault?”.
