With no protests on Thursday, the fourth day of Maharashtra Assembly monsoon session started calmly. After the opposition’s demand to appoint Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar as Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the legislative assembly was met, the current lookout is for electing the deputy chairman in state’s legislative council.

Earlier, the opposition parties had demanded the appointment of LoP saying that it is their “right”. Meanwhile, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Babasaheb Thorat had named Wadettiwar for the post.

Thorat had written to Maharashtra Legislative Assembly speaker Haribhau Bagade that Wadettiwar enjoys full support of the opposition parties and he should be the LoP. Reacting to this, the speaker had narrated that the decision on the same will be taken in some time.

The opposition had earlier informed that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had made Wadettiwar’s appointment “conditional”.

CM Fadnavis had earlier stated that Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar will be appointed as LoP if Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairman Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar announces election for the deputy chairman post which has been vacant since last year after Congress leader Manikrao Thakre’s term ended.

Given the majority strength of Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP) NDA in Maharashtra legislature, the opposition was earlier trying to avoid the same. The process to elect the deputy chairman in the state’s legislative council is expected to happen today.
