Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday launched a new flood warning system for Mumbai and called this development as a ‘boon’. The city floods nearly every year during monsoon season due to heavy rainfall which causes huge trouble for the people residing in different parts of the financial capital.
The Integrated Flood Warning System (INFLOWS) has been developed for Mumbai and was inaugurated by the Maharashtra CM via video conferencing. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan was also present at the launch and said that this will benefit the people in Mumbai as it can predict floods.
The Chief Minister said that this was a gift for people of Mumbai from the central government. “I hope if Maharashtra could get a similar alert system for the political storm as well,” Thackeray humoured.
The INFLOWS has been developed by the Ministry of Earth Sciences with close coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Vardhan stated that this will provide early warning for flooding, especially during high rainfall and cyclones.
The Union Minister said that INFLOWS was one of the most advanced systems which would allow people in Mumbai to take precaution in advance. India has developed an early tsunami warning system for the whole world and the country would assist other nations as well, he said.
On June 26, 2005, Mumbai received huge rainfall in less time which led to major flooding in the city. After this, several pumping stations have been developed in the city to stop entering the city and pumps it out as well.
Thackeray further pointed out that some parts of Mumbai are below sea level due to which the sea water enters the city during high tide. However, the pumping stations developed in the city help to stop the ingress of water into the city.
