Political party Shiv Sena recently called out the Congress’ decision to make senior leader Sonia Gandhi the party interim president and called it ‘inhuman’. An editorial in the party’s mouthpiece – Saamana – stated that forcing Sonia Gandhi, who has health issues, to take charge of the grand old party, must be seen as a big failure.

While Saamana's editorial titled - Congress Ka Meena Bazaar - criticised the party's role in making Sonia Gandhi the interim president, it applauded the former party president Rahul Gandhi for not budging from his stand that the next party president should be from outside the Gandhi family.

Owing to the humiliating loss in the Lok Sabha 2019 elections, Rahul Gandhi had resigned from the post of Congress president. Despite repeated appeals from top party leaders and workers, Gandhi remained firm on his decision of not continuing as party president.

The editorial further pointed out that Rahul Gandhi had rejected the idea of Priyanka Gandhi being given the charge of the party.

Shiv Sena in its mouthpiece further stated that with veteran leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel, Mallikarjun Kharge, Motilal Vora, AK Antony, it was not possible for the Congress to move ahead.

Congress had declared Sonia Gandhi as its interim president last Saturday after a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in New Delhi. After leading the party for almost 19 years, Sonia Gandhi had decided to step down in 2017 owing to health problems. Accordingly, Rahul Gandhi was named the Congress president in December, 2017.
