Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has written a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray demanding that private doctors should get insurance similar to COVID warriors. He said that it was insensitive to deny insurance to doctors in the private sector.

In the letter, Thackeray said that he met a delegation of doctors from the private sector and the experience of their hard work shared by them during the coronavirus period is really commendable. “However, the incident of government apathy is saddening,” the letter read.

Considering the strain on the public health system due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Maharashtra government ordered all private dispensaries, hospitals, pathology labs not to shut down their services and to be ready to serve the patients.

“As far as I know, majority of private service doctors and other private medical staff in Maharashtra continues to serve patients, committed to their profession The state government announced that it will cover the insurance but is now denying the same,” Thackeray said.

Raj Thackeray said that the families of private doctors who are dying due to the coronavirus are being denied insurance cover of ₹50 lakh by the state government.

“The government is refusing to provide insurance benefits to the family, even though the doctor in the private service died of COVID-19 while discharging his duty. The government says that the doctor was in the 'private' service. However, if this insurance cover is available to doctors and other medical personnel working in the private service as per the scheme of the central government, then by what means is the state government denying it? What is it, if not insensitivity?” the letter read.

Thackeray requested the Chief Minister to pay immediate attention to these matters and giving instructions to the concerned authorities. "I hope you will do justice to these doctors and their families in this regard," he said.
