On the occasion of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray’s birth anniversary, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) inducted Amit Thackeray into the party on Thursday. This marks the official entry of Amit Thackeray in mainstream politics.

The day-long Maha Adhiveshan was convened on Thursday morning at Goregaon’s NESCO with the launch of new MNS flag – saffron in colour with the royal stamp used during Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s rule.

This is the first time in 14 years that Raj Thackeray has organised a convention for his party and its workers. In the convention, MNS leader Bala Nandgaokar announced the induction of Amit Thackeray, son of Raj Thackeray, into the party.

It has been 14 years since MNS was formed and this is the first time I have come on stage to speak officially. I was shocked to learn that I have been appointed as the leader. This is a big responsibility for me and I will sincerely try to fulfil the same,” said Amit Thackeray.

The newly appointed MNS leader, Amit Thackeray was accompanied on stage with senior party colleagues. While addressing the gathering, Thackeray expressed his willingness to have only one book for every subject in schools.

I have expressed this idea before that students should not have so much weight on their shoulders in the form of books. There should be only one book for all the subjects,” said Amit Thackeray.

During Amit Thackeray’s speech, his mother – Sharmila Thackeray – got emotional and said that she expects his son to work for the people irrespective of his position.

Raj Thackeray-led MNS dumped its party flag – a mix of saffron, green and blue along with train engine – changing the same to only saffron, in a major shift.

The party also appropriated Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. On the stage, Savakar’s portrait can be seen along with the photographs of B.R. Ambedkar, Savitribai Phule and Prabodhankar Thackeray.
