In the aftermath of the Supreme Court chartering the road for 27 per cent Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation in local body polls across Maharashtra, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reportedly organised a lottery process to reserve the OBC seats.

According to accounts, the draw will be held on Friday, July 29 at Bal Gandharva Ranga Mandir in Bandra. During the process, 63 seats which will also entail seats for women from the OBC community will be reserved for the community. On the other hand, recommendations and objections on the lottery can be filed till August 2.

With an aggregate of 236 electoral wards in Mumbai for the BMC elections, 63 have been kept reserved for the OBC. This will include 32 seats for OBC women candidates. Further, narratives mention that the slated draw will not have any impact on the lottery undertaken for the Scheduled Cast (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) community on May 31. However, the lottery will change the reservation for women.

Based on reports, the State Election Commission has opined that those wards which were not reserved for the OBCs in 2007, 2012 and 2017 should be accorded priority this time. Moreover, the OBC reservation draft will be published on the civic authority's website on July 30. Similarly, the final list of the OBC reservation will be declared by the BMC on August 13.
