The Shiv Sena has hit back the opposition which has been criticising the ruling party amidst the continual downpour and waterlogging in the city. The Sena further took to Saamana which is considered to be the party’s mouthpiece to speak about the same.

The editorial in its front-page article stated that for a city like Mumbai, heavy rains in a short period of time along with tidal surges is not new. However, the entire responsibility for the city of Mumbai cannot be put on the civic body alone. Other government agencies are also responsible for various functions in Mumbai. The editorial further stated that all such systems should also shoulder their responsibilities.

Every monsoon, torrential rains inundate parts of Mumbai, affecting people's lives and transportation. Again, Mumbai's geography and other conditions play a huge role in the same. In such a situation, the employees of the Municipal Corporation, the police, the employees of the essential services and the disaster management have all been trying to perform their duty efficiently, as per the Saamana article.

On Tuesday, in just 24 hours, 286.4 mm of rain fell on the city of Mumbai. This was the record rainfall in the last two and a half decades. The rain which continued to bat on Wednesday brought the public life that had started in Mumbai to a standstill. Between 1994 and 2020, Mumbai had never received such a massive amount of rainfall in a single day in September.

However, with the city experiencing at least 3-4 days of rains above 150 mm in a few hours annually, the civic body will have to come up with more long term solutions for dewatering to avoid a repeat of the 2005 floods which had shaken the city to the core.
