Shiv Sena had promised to exempt property tax on houses up to 500 square feet in Mumbai and Thane. The same proposal was sent for an approval to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). However, Shiv Sena was shocked to know that the file was not sent ahead to the state government for a final approval.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is demanding an exemption of property tax on houses up to 700 sq ft.

This did not go down well with Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray who said that BJP should first exempt the property tax on houses which come under their governing areas and then demand from Mumbai and Thane houses. He further said that soon, people will realise that BJP is playing dirty politics over houses and they will kick them out of the office.

What did Uddhav Thackeray say?

- BMC’s exemption of property tax is a good decision
- This decision is for those who voted for us
- We promised the same to Mumbai and Thane residents
- But, what about Nashik, Pune, Solapur and Amravati? You (BJP) have held here
- If you (BJP) are really concerned about the residents, then the property tax should be exempted in BMC as well
- You (BJP) continue with your dirty politics, people will throw you out of power

Background

Shiv Sena had promised that they would exempt property tax on houses up to 500 sq ft in Mumbai and will give tax concession on houses up to 700 sq ft in their manifesto, prior to the BMC elections. In July 2017, the BMC passed the said proposal as well. According to the Sena, the BMC commissioner did not forward the proposal to the state government under secretarial pressure.

Shiv Sena corporators created a ruckus in the BMC house while Sena MLA did the same in the legislative assembly. The opposition was aggravated when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the government is planning to exempt property tax on houses up to 700 sq ft in Mumbai.
