Just minutes after retiring, the MVA government, appointed Kunte as the principal advisor to the Chief Minister. This post had become vacant since the resignation of Ajoy Mehta, who became the chief of RERA.

Based on accounts, now the additional charge of Chief Secretary has been given to Additional Chief Secretary (Planning) Debashish Chakrabarty. Chakrabarty is from the 1986 IAS batch and will retire in the span of three months. Chakrabarty has earlier worked as the Principal Secretary of Housing, amongst others.

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray had sought a six-month extension for Kunte who is an IAS officer of the 1985 batch. Earlier, he had worked as the municipal commissioner of Mumbai, as well as the head of planning, finance, general administration department and environment.

Additionally, IAS officers Manukumar Srivastava, Sujata Saunik and Manoj Saunik of the 1986 and 1987 batches respectively, are claimed to be contenders for the post of Chief Secretary. On the other hand, Chakrabarty is due for retirement in February 2022.
