Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday said that it was required to decentralise new industries in the state amid the COVID-19 crisis. Thackeray favoured the decentralisation of new industries in the state for reasons to control population density.

The Chief Minister on Tuesday held a review meeting of Mumbai-Nagpur expressway and spoke about the same. The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, also known as ‘Samruddhi Mahamarg’, is under construction. The 701-kilometres-long expressway will join the two capitals of Maharashtra and will cut the travel time in half.

Travelling through the eight-lane expressway from Mumbai to Nagpur or vice versa after its construction will cut short travel time from 16 hours to eight hours. The corridor is named ‘Hindu Hruday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray’ after Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray.

While speaking at the review meeting, Thackeray said that it has been noted that the state government had to impose lockdown in areas with huge population density and most of them are in industrial belts.

Therefore, it was required to decentralise the new industries and build them at various places along the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Corridor. Thackeray said that the industrial nodes should be set up in separate zones and facilities should be provided to new industries in these areas.

Thackeray also directed the officials to build trauma care centre at regular intervals along the expressway while developing the area in accordance with the geographical situation.

“The expressway will link 24 districts of Maharashtra and planning for industrial, agriculture and tourism units in districts along with the Mumbai-Pune expressway should be done as per the geographical conditions,” the Chief Minister said.

In the virtual review meeting, Maharashtra Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde was also present along with other officials.
