Farmers all across the country are agitating over the flawed policies of the ruling government. However, the ruling establishment is in denial and is unable to understand the reason behind farmer’s agitation. Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh called the farmers movement a “publicity stunt”.

Reacting to this, Maharashtra Congress President Ashok Chavan has demanded that the Modi government should apologise from the farmers of the country. Chavan said that the statement made by the agriculture minister of the country is condemnable, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not fulfil any promises and assurances given to farmers during the 2014 general assembly elections. The government’s policies have devastated the farmers of the country.

Speaking about the increase in farmer suicide across the country, Chavan informed that since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government came into power, the farmers' suicide has increased by 41.7 per cent. Over 44,000 farmers have committed suicide in last four years and 15 thousand farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra alone. During the UPA regime, the agricultural growth was 4.2 per cent which now stands at only 1.9 per cent.

PM Modi promised the farmers more productivity and nothing has been done in the past four years. Modi government has waived loans of the industrialist worth ₹2.5 lakh crores but the loans of the farmers in distress have not been waived off despite false promises of loan waivers for the farmers. Chavan further added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has betrayed the farmers of the country and now his ministers are mocking and making blatant remarks on the farmer’s issue.
