Western Railway (WR) had introduced the AC Local trains in 2017 and it started running on tracks on December 25. As it completed two years, Western Railway recently released a statement stating that it has earned ₹40.03 crores in the span of two years.

It further stated that over 18,000 commuters travel from AC Local train every day which is approximately 1,500 commuters in each train. In the last two years, as many as 8,43,343 tickets were sold for the train, of which 6,62,565 were single-journey tickets and 1,80,778 were season tickets.

Currently, Western Railway operates 12 trains between Churchgate and Virar out of which 8 trains ply on the fast route. Notably, there are great security features including automatic door closing, talkback and fire-fighting systems in every coach. It has proved to decongest the road as people prefer to travel via train and ditch their cars. Given the success that the trains have, the government is planning to ply more AC locals during peak hours. This in turn, will lead to a reduction in the frequency of non-AC trains and can lead to more overcrowded trains as the majority of Mumbaikars prefer to travel in non-ac trains.

The first AC local for Central Railway arrived at the Kurla car shed on December 9. The divisional railway manager, CR, Shalabh Goel said that modification work, including those of electrical fitments, will be completed in a month, after which it will be commissioned. He added that nearly 100 staffers were being trained to operate the AC local, and they have planned to deploy a woman to pilot it on its maiden run.
